INDULGENCE

My caffeine and me

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

The wake of the day, everyday without a doubt, I walk faithfully to my espresso machine to make that cup of latte or espresso to kick start the day. I love my coffee and I love them strong. It’s probably due to the kind of robust caffeine fuel that was fed to me when I was young.

Getting the right kind of beans that would complement my caffeine feed had me searching for the right kind of espresso beans that I could use daily. I like Illy for the strong espresso taste but its a tad expensive and the flavor too complex. So I set out to search for a replacement or an alternative. I gladly found the dark roast espresso beans of Dean & Deluca. Nice strong dark flavor that I took a liking to. However, my caffeine joy was shortlived-the local grocer decided to just bring in the chocolates and teas rather then the beans. So with that setback, I had to hunt for replacement beans again.

Last X’mas my cool mates bought me a pack of beans from a local roaster and told me about the place. My cuz sent me a pack of beans from one of the best roasters from Melbourne. We had coffee shootout-black no milk as they looked city roast but on the lighter side. Well the local roaster’s beans were much better then the ones from Melbourne. That set my curiosity to visit the local roaster’s joint called Papa Palheta named after Francisco de Mello Palheta who is known to have brought the coffee into Brazil.

Papa Palheta is quaint and unpretentious, has a cool vibe like you have been trasported to another world. You enter this coffee world thru its backyard. Definitely like hunting for cool shops in Tokyo and nice coffee places in Melbourne ala Guerilla style. They have an alfresco section at the courtyard, a drip station and a tasting bar which is communal style of having your coffee. They also have of the best espresso machines in the world, The Synesso and that means-GOD SHOTS of Espresso!. You can tell these guys make their coffee with love and dedication. The service staff all friendly and vibrant. The place serves you a cuppa even though beans are their main business and they are not a cafe per se. My indulgence now are 2 of their in house espresso blends-Ippolito n Terra Firma. I found my local supply of espresso beans and my caffeine fuel. I think I am ready to rockit in the studio with some new music!
